IB DP Mathematics: what parents should know.
IB Diploma Programme Mathematics is a rigorous two-year course offered in two distinct pathways and two levels. Understanding which route your child is on shapes every lesson they need.
The IB DP Mathematics course runs across Years 12 and 13 as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Students choose between Analysis and Approaches (AA) or Applications and Interpretation (AI), at Standard Level or Higher Level.
Each pathway is graded on a scale of 1 to 7. Assessment combines written examination papers with an internal assessment: a mathematical exploration of roughly 12 pages. The HL papers carry a significantly heavier conceptual demand than SL.
IB exams are sat in the May session for most candidates, with a November session available in select regions. Students typically begin intensive preparation in the second term of Year 13, though building strong foundations from Year 12 is strongly advised.
A group class cannot cover four courses at once.
Lessons targeted at the exact course and level
Your tutor focuses solely on your child's pathway (AA or AI) and level (SL or HL), covering only the topics and skills that appear on their specific papers.
Past-paper technique built into every session
Tutors work through real IB past papers and mark schemes so students understand the command terms and marking points examiners look for.
Progress notes sent after every lesson
Parents receive a written session summary covering what was taught, how the student performed, and what practice has been set before the next lesson.
A two-year course that demands both rigour and versatility.
IB Diploma Programme Mathematics is set by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. It is taken by students aged 16 to 19 in IB World Schools across the GCC and globally, in two pathways and at two levels of demand.
Assessment combines two or three written examination papers with a mathematical exploration submitted as internal assessment. Grades run from 1 to 7, with 4 considered the pass threshold. HL Mathematics carries a wider and deeper syllabus than its SL counterpart.
Every Tuitional lesson follows the precise IB Mathematics syllabus guide for the student's pathway and level, so content covered in sessions maps directly onto examination questions they will face in the May or November exam series.
What a one-to-one IB Mathematics lesson actually looks like.
Every session follows a tested four-phase structure: recap, teach, apply, review. Parents know exactly what happened; students leave with a clear task for next time.

- 0-5 min
Recap and quick diagnostic
The tutor opens by reviewing the homework set last session and asking two or three targeted questions to pinpoint where understanding has and has not landed.
Example: The student attempted integration by substitution from the AA HL syllabus. The tutor checks which substitution steps caused errors before moving on.
- 5-25 min
Teach the target topic
The tutor explains the concept from scratch, using a shared digital whiteboard, then walks through a worked example step by step at the student's pace.
Example: For AI SL, the tutor models a full hypothesis test using the chi-squared statistic, explaining degrees of freedom and p-value interpretation with a real data set.
- 25-50 min
Apply to real IB past-paper questions
The student attempts questions from genuine IB past papers under exam conditions. The tutor uses the official mark scheme to give precise, examiner-aligned feedback on each step.
Example: Paper 2 AA HL, May 2022, Question 8 on vectors and planes. The tutor highlights the exact mark-scheme wording for each method mark.
- 50-60 min
Review, set homework, write report
The tutor summarises what was covered, confirms the student's understanding with one final question, and sets a focused homework task to consolidate the lesson.
Example: Three IB-style questions on binomial distribution (AA SL Topic 4) to be attempted before the next session, with answers submitted via the platform.
After the lesson
Parents receive a written session note covering the topic taught, the student's performance, and the homework set. The full session recording is available on the platform for the student to replay at any time.

The qualification that bridges school mathematics and university-level thinking.
IB Diploma Programme Mathematics is designed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation for students in the final two years of secondary school. It is offered in two pathways, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at Standard or Higher Level.
External examinations and a personal mathematical exploration together produce a grade from 1 to 7. Universities worldwide accept strong IB Mathematics results as evidence of quantitative readiness for STEM, economics, and social-science programmes.
IB Diploma subjects we tutor.
Why IB families across the GCC trust Tuitional.
My son moved from a 4 to a 6 in Mathematics AA HL over one term. His tutor knew the IB mark scheme inside out and drilled the exact question types that appear on Paper 3. We could not have managed the internal assessment without this support.
We tried two other tutors before Tuitional. The difference was the structure. Every session had a clear goal, a written report came through the same evening, and my daughter always knew exactly what to practise before the next lesson.
I genuinely did not understand the exploration component until my tutor broke it down step by step. He helped me choose a topic, structure my argument, and meet the IB criteria without doing the work for me.
Flexible scheduling made all the difference during the IB mock period. We could add an extra session mid-week with almost no notice. My daughter's confidence in Paper 2 improved noticeably within a month.
IB DP Mathematics tutoring — your questions, answered.
The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.
?Which IB Maths pathway do your tutors cover?+
Our tutors cover all four IB Mathematics courses: Analysis and Approaches SL, Analysis and Approaches HL, Applications and Interpretation SL, and Applications and Interpretation HL. When you book, simply tell us which course your child is enrolled in and we match accordingly.
?Can a tutor help with the IB mathematical exploration?+
Yes. Tutors support students through every stage of the internal assessment: choosing a topic, structuring the exploration, applying the correct mathematical processes, and meeting the IB assessment criteria. The tutor guides rather than writes, keeping the work genuinely the student's own.
?How early should my child start IB Maths tutoring?+
Starting at the beginning of Year 12 gives the strongest foundation, as early topics in both AA and AI directly underpin later units. Many families also join partway through Year 13 ahead of mock exams. A tutor can run a diagnostic in the first session to identify the priority topics regardless of when your child starts.
?Are sessions live or pre-recorded?+
Every session is a live, one-to-one video lesson with a real tutor. There are no pre-recorded classes or automated lessons. Sessions are recorded by the platform so your child can replay any explanation they want to revisit.
?How much does IB Maths tutoring cost?+
Pricing for IB Diploma Programme tutoring is listed on our tutoring packages page, where you can also see the session options available. There is no lock-in: you can pay per session or purchase a package and cancel at any time.
?What if my child does not get on with the first tutor?+
If the first match does not feel right, we offer a free re-match at no extra cost. Our tutor-matching process takes your child's course, level, learning style, and schedule into account, but chemistry matters too and we want to get it right.
