AQA A Level Biology: what parents should know.

AQA A Level Biology is one of the most widely taken science qualifications in the UK system. It combines demanding written exams with required practicals, making subject-specific technique essential for strong grades.

What it is

AQA A Level Biology is a two-year qualification for students aged 16 to 18. It covers cell biology, genetics, ecology, and physiology across three written papers, with required practical endorsement assessed separately.

How it is graded

Students are graded A* to E based on three written papers sat at the end of Year 13. The required practical component carries a separate pass or fail endorsement that does not affect the overall grade.

When exams happen

AQA A Level Biology exams are sat in the May and June series at the end of the two-year course. Most students begin structured revision and past-paper practice well ahead of that final summer series.

Why one-to-one

A classroom can't move at your child's pace.

Sessions built around the real gaps

The tutor identifies exactly which AQA Biology topics are holding the grade back and spends lesson time there, not on content the student already knows.

Past-paper technique from day one

Every session includes timed AQA past-paper questions and mark-scheme review so students learn to write answers the examiner actually awards marks to.

Progress shared with parents each week

After every session, parents receive tutor notes covering what was covered, what improved, and what the next lesson will focus on.

What is AQA A Level Biology?

The qualification that opens doors to medicine, science, and beyond.

AQA A Level Biology is a full A Level qualification set by the AQA exam board, designed for students in Years 12 and 13. It is widely accepted for entry to university courses in medicine, dentistry, biosciences, and related fields.

Assessment is through three written papers at the end of Year 13, graded A* to E. Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry 35% of total marks; Paper 3 carries the remaining 30%. Required practicals are assessed by the school and carry a separate endorsement.

Every Tuitional lesson follows the exact AQA Biology specification, so content, question styles, and mark-scheme conventions are aligned to what students will face in their actual papers. Nothing is taught off-syllabus.

What a one-to-one AQA Biology lesson actually looks like

Every session follows a tested four-phase structure: recap, teach, apply, review. The tutor adapts the pace and content based on what the student needs that day.

Book a trial lesson

A typical 60-minute session

  1. 0-5 min

    Recap and quick diagnostic

The tutor opens with two or three short questions to check retention from the previous session and spot any lingering gaps before the new topic begins.

Example: quick verbal questions on DNA replication base-pairing rules before moving into transcription and translation.

  2. 5-25 min

    Teach the target topic

The tutor works through the target AQA Biology topic using annotated diagrams, concept maps, and guided explanation, checking understanding at each stage rather than delivering a monologue.

Example: explaining the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction (AQA spec section 8.5), with a diagram of actin, myosin, and ATP hydrolysis built live on screen.

  3. 25-50 min

Apply it to AQA past-paper questions

The student attempts real AQA past-paper questions under timed conditions while the tutor observes. Mark-scheme language is reviewed line by line so the student understands exactly what earns marks.

Example: a six-mark AQA Paper 2 question on the control of blood glucose concentration, reviewed against the published mark scheme to identify command-word technique.

  4. 50-60 min

    Review, set homework, and report

The tutor summarises what was covered, confirms what improved, and sets a targeted homework task. Session notes and the recording are shared with the student and parent immediately after.

Example: homework set to complete an AQA required practical write-up on the effect of enzyme concentration on reaction rate.

After the lesson

Parents receive a written session report covering topics covered, areas of progress, and the next lesson plan. The full session recording is saved to the student's account and can be rewatched at any time alongside flashcards and curriculum-mapped resources.

What is AQA A Level Biology?

The science A Level that demands both knowledge and exam technique.

AQA A Level Biology is set by the AQA exam board for students in Years 12 and 13. Three written papers cover topics from cell biology and genetics to ecosystems and homeostasis, all assessed at the end of the second year.

Strong grades require more than memorisation. Students must apply biological knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, interpret data, and write concise answers that match AQA mark-scheme language precisely.

Parent Feedback

Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for A Level Biology.

My daughter was drowning in the AQA Biology content before her mocks. Her tutor broke every topic down clearly and drilled past-paper technique with her every session. She went into her final exams feeling genuinely prepared, not just hopeful.

We relocated from the UK mid-Year 12 and were worried about continuity. Tuitional matched our son with an AQA Biology specialist within days. The sessions fit around his new school schedule and he hasn't missed a beat.

I always found the genetics and inheritance topics confusing in class. My tutor on Tuitional went through them step by step using diagrams on screen. I actually enjoy those questions now.

Flexible scheduling made all the difference. My son sits AQA Biology and his tutor was available on weekends and evenings. His grade moved from a C to a B in two months of regular sessions.

Common questions

AQA A Level Biology tutoring, your questions answered.

The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.

?Do your tutors follow the exact AQA Biology specification?+

Yes. Every AQA Biology tutor at Tuitional is trained on the current AQA specification, including all topic areas, required practicals, and mark-scheme conventions for Papers 1, 2, and 3. Nothing is taught off-syllabus.

?How often should my child have AQA Biology tutoring sessions?+

Most students benefit from one or two sessions per week. Students who are revising ahead of final exams often increase to more frequent sessions for focused past-paper practice. Your tutor will recommend a realistic schedule after the first lesson.

?Can we start tutoring mid-Year 12 or mid-Year 13?+

Absolutely. Tuitional accepts students at any point in the course. The tutor reviews what has been covered at school, identifies gaps, and builds a session plan from there. Mid-year enrolment is common, especially for families who have recently relocated.

?What topics does AQA A Level Biology cover?+

The AQA A Level Biology specification covers biological molecules, cells, organisms and their environment, genetics, ecosystems, and control systems including the nervous and endocrine systems. Required practicals are embedded throughout both years of the course.

?Are sessions recorded so my child can review them later?+

Yes. Every session is recorded and saved to the student's account. Students can rewatch any lesson at any time, which is particularly useful when revising a difficult topic or preparing for mocks.

?How much does AQA A Level Biology tutoring cost?+

Tuitional's A Level rates are published on the tutoring packages page. You can pay per session or buy a package with no lock-in and the option to cancel at any time.
